January is a season of fresh starts. After the holidays, many of us feel ready to reset, physically, emotionally and spiritually. If you’ve been wondering how to bring more joy and connection into your life in 2026, here’s an idea: sing. If this sounds like what you need, you don’t have to wait, just show up at choir rehearsal any Wednesday at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary. Or email me at musicdirector@firstuuomaha.org if you have questions.

Music isn’t just entertainment. It’s medicine. It heals, energizes and connects us in ways few other activities can. And the best part? You don’t have to do it alone. Our choir is waiting for you, especially if you’re an alto, but know, we need sopranos, tenors and basses as well!
Why Music Heals
Singing is good for your body. It strengthens your lungs, improves posture and even boosts your immune system. Studies show that singing lowers stress hormones and releases endorphins, the “feel-good” chemicals that lift your mood. It’s like a natural antidepressant, wrapped in melody.
But music doesn’t stop at the physical. It nourishes the spirit. When you sing, you express something beyond words. You tap into joy, creativity and a sense of transcendence that reminds us that we’re part of something bigger.
The Joy of Community Singing

Choir is more than music, it’s belonging. It’s laughter during rehearsals, harmonies that give you goosebumps and friendships that grow note by note. In a world that often feels fragmented, singing together is a radical act of connection. And I hear the director cracks some pretty good jokes.
When voices blend, something magical happens. We create beauty that none of us could make alone. That’s the power of community and the gift of choir.
How to Get Involved
If you’ve ever thought, I’d love to sing, but I’m not sure I’m good enough, let that go. Choir is for everyone who loves music and wants to share it. Whether you’re a seasoned singer or just curious, there’s a place for you.
Rehearsals are weekly, and the commitment is joyful, not stressful. You’ll learn, laugh and leave feeling lighter than when you arrived. And yes, we’re especially in need of altos right now, so if that’s you, consider this your personal invitation!
