Are you looking to deepen your understanding of how to provide religious education for young children in a way that nurtures curiosity, spiritual growth, and storytelling? First Unitarian Church of Omaha is excited to host an upcoming Spirit Play Training on February 22nd, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with guest trainer Rev. Jennifer Innis. This full-day event is perfect for religious education teachers, childcare staff, volunteers [current & future!], and parents who want to bring a hands-on, Montessori-inspired approach to faith development for preschool and elementary-aged children.
What is Spirit Play?
Spirit Play is a unique method of religious education rooted in Montessori philosophy. It encourages children to explore spiritual themes through storytelling, wondering questions, and self-directed activities. Inspired by Jerome Berryman’s Godly Play, this approach allows children to engage deeply with Unitarian Universalist principles, world religions, and ethical concepts in a way that is both meaningful and developmentally appropriate.

Key elements of Spirit Play include:
Sacred Storytelling: Children listen to engaging stories that introduce spiritual and moral lessons.
Wondering Questions: Open-ended questions help children reflect on the story’s meaning in their own lives.
Independent Exploration: Kids choose activities that allow them to express their thoughts and creativity in response to the story.
Prepared Environment: A carefully designed space encourages autonomy and a sense of sacredness.
