RE Team Purpose & Goals: The Religious Education (RE) Team partners with the Coordinator of Children & Family Programs to nurture a vibrant and inclusive ministry for children, youth, and families at First Unitarian Church of Omaha. The team plays a vital role in shaping, supporting, and sustaining programming that aligns with Unitarian Universalist values and the spiritual needs of our multigenerational community.Â
Key Responsibilities:
Curriculum Support:Â Collaborate with the Coordinator to review, select, and adapt age-appropriate curricula that meet the evolving needs of participants.
Volunteer Recruitment & Support:Â Assist with recruiting, welcoming, and supporting volunteer teachers and program helpers.
Program Planning:Â Help design and implement creative, engaging religious education programs and intergenerational experiences throughout the year.
Evaluation & Feedback:Â Participate in regular reflection on the effectiveness and impact of RE offerings, providing feedback and helping identify opportunities for growth and improvement.
Communication:Â Help promote RE programs by sharing information through church e-news, announcements, and conversations with families and members.
Future Visioning:Â Partner with the Coordinator to plan for the future of RE at First Unitarian, including offering input on the annual RE budget and long-range goals.
Team Participation:Â Attend monthly RE Team meetings, support special events (such as OWL, Youth Cons, and community traditions), and maintain open communication with the Coordinator and Minister.
Time Commitment:Approximately 3–5 hours per month, depending on activities and events.
Support & Training:Team members receive ongoing support and orientation from the Coordinator. Opportunities for further learning, connection, and development (e.g., regional RE workshops or UUA resources) are encouraged.
Why It Matters:Â
The RE Team embodies our collective commitment to nurturing the spiritual lives of children and youth and building a community rooted in love, justice, and curiosity. Together, this team plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation of Unitarian Universalists.
Process & Purpose of this document:Â This RE Team role description was developed by working backwards from the Coordinator of Children & Family Programs job description, which was created by a task force in Dec 2024 when the Director of Religious Education position was eliminated. Due to the 30% cut to RE staffing, an increased amount of volunteer support is needed for the RE Program to continue operating at its current level.
