Location: First Unitarian Church of Omaha, 3114 Harney St.

Hours: Approximately 2 hours per week, including Sunday mornings 10:30-11:30am, on 2-4 Sundays per month.

Pay: $17.00/hour

Position Summary

First Unitarian Church of Omaha is seeking an engaging Elementary Sunday Morning Leader to help create a welcoming and meaningful Sunday morning experience for our 1st-6th graders. This staff member will work alongside 1-2 classroom volunteers on 2-4 Sundays per month.


The leader will work approximately 2 hours per week, divided roughly equally between classroom teaching and lesson preparation. Curriculum and program guidance will be provided by the Coordinator of Child & Family Programs. The leader's role is to prepare for and facilitate engaging, age-appropriate sessions from the provided curriculum.


Our Sunday School program helps children explore Unitarian Universalist values, build relationships, ask questions, practice kindness and inclusion, and discover ways they can make a difference in their communities and the world.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare sessions using provided curriculum, resources, and program guidance.

  • Facilitate approximately one hour of elementary class each week that Sunday School is offered.

  • Adapt activities as needed to meet the ages, abilities, and interests of the children present.

  • Create a classroom environment that is welcoming, inclusive, playful, and respectful.

  • Lead activities such as stories, discussion, games, art, hands-on projects, and other experiential learning.

  • Support positive relationships and a sense of belonging among children.

  • Communicate with the Coordinator of Child & Family Programs about classroom needs, supplies, attendance, or concerns.

  • Follow First Unitarian's safety policies and procedures for children and youth.

  • Work collaboratively with classroom volunteers and other religious education staff and leaders.


Qualifications

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys working with elementary-aged children and respects children as individuals.

  • Is dependable and comfortable taking responsibility for a classroom.

  • Can communicate and engage with children in an encouraging, age-appropriate way.

  • Values inclusion and can help create a welcoming environment for children and families of varied identities, backgrounds, abilities, and family structures.

  • Is comfortable working within the values and educational approach of a Unitarian Universalist congregation (you do not need to be Unitarian Universalist to apply, you can learn more about UU values here: https://www.uua.org/beliefs).

  • Can prepare independently with the guidance of the provided curriculum and Coordinator of Child & Family Programs.

  • Has experience working with children in education, childcare, camps, religious education, youth programs, or a similar setting. Formal teaching credentials are not required.

  • Familiarity or experience with Montessori education is a plus, but not required.


Schedule & Compensation

  • This position averages approximately 2 paid hours per week that Sunday School is offered:

    • Approximately 1 hour: Sunday morning classroom teaching

    • Approximately 1 hour: Lesson review, preparation, and planning

  • Compensation: $17.00 per hour.

  • The position follows the Sunday School program calendar, with specific Sundays and scheduling coordinated in advance.
