When the World Feels Heavy, We Sing

It doesn’t take much scrolling, listening, or living these days to feel the weight of the world. So much is happening—so many headlines that unsettle us, so many systems that feel strained, so many people hurting in ways that can leave us tired, angry, or unsure where to turn. It’s a fair question to ask: What can we even do?
This year’s Choir Sunday leans gently but firmly into that question. The theme, “We Resist: Songs of Courage, Community and Hope,” doesn’t pretend that everything is fine or that music alone can fix what is broken. Instead, it offers something deeply human (and deeply needed) right now: a way to stay open, connected, and courageous when it would be easier to shut down.
Throughout history, music has been a form of protest. Sometimes loud and defiant. Sometimes tender and aching. Songs have carried truth when words felt risky, gathered people when fear tried to isolate us, and reminded communities of what they love and what they refuse to let go of. Singing together becomes a way of saying, we are still here, we still care, we still choose one another.

In this service, the Sanctuary Singers invite us into music that names loss without being swallowed by it, that honors pain without glorifying despair and that insists hope is something we practice, not something we wait for. These songs and readings ask us to resist numbness, resist division, and resist the temptation to believe that our
small acts don’t matter. They remind us that staying tender in a hard time is itself a brave choice.
Choir Sunday isn’t a concert so much as a shared offering. It’s an hour to breathe together, listen together and remember that we don’t carry the weight of the world alone. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, weary, or in need of grounding, this service is for you. If you’ve been feeling energized and ready to keep showing up, this service is for you too.
We hope you’ll join us for this powerful morning of music, reflection, and community. And if someone in your life could use a little hope, a little beauty, or a reminder that love still has a voice, bring them along. There’s room in the circle.
We can’t wait to sing with you.
