Learn More: Alan McDonald

Alan McDonald was 25 years old when he was selected as the chief designer for First Unitarian’s building. His father, John McDonald, was the most prestigious architect in Omaha at the time. Their firm was responsible for the Joslyn Art Museum, Regis Hotel, three Carnegie libraries across Nebraska, several private homes, and many more. McDonald was also an avid supporter of the Omaha Community Playhouse.

McDonald married Helen Scobie at the church in September 1917. Helen also became a devoted member of First Unitarian after her home church pastor refused to marry the couple (due to McDonald being a Unitarian). Both are buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Omaha.
