In the early 1950s the Baby Boomers were entering school and, as the numbers swelled, new school buildings were built to accommodate them. The same was true of Sunday Schools - and First Unitarian was no exception. The original building could not accommodate the growing numbers in our Religious Education program.
At the 1951 Annual Meeting, the Congregation voted to raise $45,000 (more than $500,000 in 2025) to construct an annex to the current building and a Capital Fund Drive began.
Dr. George P. Merritt and Lulu Merritt were key figures in the Capital Campaign, donating generously of both time and treasure to the expansion. Dr. Merritt was a prominent ophthalmologist and osteopath, as well as an accomplished photographer. He also published a monthly newsletter entitled Your Health. The cozy room at the top of the stairs was named in honor of their dedication.
