Sabbatical Questions and Answers

Sabbaticals are vital periods of renewal and reflection, fostering long-term well-being and effectiveness in leadership roles. For Rev. Shari, this sabbatical represents an opportunity to step away from daily responsibilities and engage in purposeful rest, benefiting both her personal growth and the congregation’s future.

What is a Sabbatical

A sabbatical is a period of paid leave for study, reflection, rest, and renewal, aimed at fostering long-term, effective ministry. It allows clergy to step back from their daily responsibilities and recharge, returning with fresh perspectives and renewed energy. As Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor once said, "The best sabbaticals are not vacations. They are intentional times for ministry to the minister, so that the minister can return with renewed strength to minister to others."

Why is Rev. Shari Taking a Sabbatical?

Sabbatical leave is a standard benefit for Unitarian Universalist (UU) clergy and is included in Rev. Shari’s Letter of Agreement. This practice reflects a rich tradition within Unitarian Universalism, emphasizing the importance of self-care and professional renewal. The sabbatical is a covenant between Rev. Shari and the congregation to ensure she can continue to serve effectively and passionately. As Rev. Victoria Weinstein notes, "The sabbatical honors the minister’s role as a spiritual leader and recognizes the deep work of spiritual growth and renewal."

Who Benefits?

Rev. Shari’s sabbatical will benefit both her and the congregation. It provides her with time to rest, reflect, and gather new ideas, which will enrich her ministry upon her return. For the congregation, this is an opportunity to deepen collective leadership and resilience. A refreshed minister often inspires and energizes the entire community, fostering growth and innovation.

When is Rev. Shari Taking Her Sabbatical?

Rev. Shari’s sabbatical is scheduled from July 1 to October 31, 2025.

What Happens While She is Gone?

The congregation’s Sabbatical Committee has been working on a comprehensive plan to ensure the continuity of congregational ministries during Rev. Shari’s leave. Responsibilities for worship, pastoral care, rites of passage, and leadership will be assigned to various individuals. A modest, pre-designated fund will support this coverage. This thoughtful preparation underscores the congregation’s commitment to supporting both Rev. Shari and its own members during this transitional period.

What Boundaries Are in Place?

The Sabbatical Committee will also support Rev. Shari in transitioning to her sabbatical, maintaining clear boundaries during her leave, and re-engaging with the congregation after her return. Sabbaticals thrive on mutual respect, with both minister and congregation understanding the importance of uninterrupted time for renewal.

What’s Next?

The Sabbatical Committee will provide regular updates, share opportunities for input, and outline the plan for coverage soon. Stay tuned for a timeline and additional communication about how the congregation can support this important period.
